The Ideal Copy
This is your father's jacket.
by ROMAN ESPEJO

Elvis wore one. So did Steve McQueen. Frank Sinatra, Arnold Palmer, and the Clash did, too. Such is the classic- yet outsider- appeal of the Harrington jacket, or the G9, originally designed by Mancunian clothing company Baracuta in 1937. Tartan-lined and mock-collared with elasticated cuffs and waistband, the wind- and rainproof blouson is also trend-proof, making its way, over the last 70 years, onto the silver screen as well as into the closets of those with punk, mod, and otherwise anticonformist inclinations. Other versions of the Harrington have been made by Lacoste, Lonsdale, and countless others, but only the much-imitated Baracuta G9 reaches cult and icon status.
