I took slow and steady ownership of my father's black and brown pair of Sperry boat shoes when I was a gawky seventh grader. L.A. Gear and British Knights were cooler, but you didn't have to tie on boat shoes, and they effortlessly weathered weekends on the boardwalk and at amusement parks. Unlike the aforementioned sneakers, Sperry's boat shoe, now entering it seventy-third spring, is cooler than ever, coming a long way from that wintry day an inspired Paul Sperry got the idea for the water-friendly kicks from his cocker spaniel, Prince. I've upgraded to a black patentleather pair that get more looks than my trendiest trainers. Also, Sperry's recent collaboration with Band of Outsiders is on deck with the boat shoe's subversive stylishness.
